Checking a Dutch company's VAT registration
A Dutch company becomes liable for VAT by registering with the Belastingdienst. On registration it is assigned a VAT number (btw-nummer) in the form EE followed by 9 digits, the letter B and 2 more digits. That number is the only reliable way to confirm a partner really accounts for VAT.
The check runs against VIES (the VAT Information Exchange System) operated by the European Commission. It returns the current registration status across the whole EU, so a foreign supplier is verified exactly the same way.
What you can enter
- KVK number — eight digits. We find the company in the register and check its VAT number.
- VAT number (btw-nummer) — for example NL123456789B01. Checked directly in VIES.
- Company name — we return the matches and you pick the right company.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I check whether a company is registered for VAT?
- Enter the company's KVK number, VAT number or name in the search above. If the company has a VAT number, we verify it directly against the European Commission's VIES system and show the current result.
- Is there a public list of VAT payers in the Netherlands?
- Not as a browsable list. The Belastingdienst does not publish one, and a VAT number is checked one at a time against the European Commission’s VIES system. So enter the company’s KVK number or VAT number here and you get the current answer immediately.
- What is the difference between a KVK number and a VAT number?
- The KVK number is the eight-digit number the Handelsregister assigns to every company when it is founded. A VAT number is issued only to a company registered as liable for VAT and takes the form NL, 9 digits, the letter B and 2 more digits. Every company therefore has a KVK number; not every company has a VAT number.
- Why does a partner's VAT number matter?
- If a supplier puts an invalid VAT number on an invoice, it can cause problems when deducting input VAT. Checking it in VIES is a routine part of vetting a new business partner.
